Candles are the perfect way to make a room feel cosier while filling our homes with a fragrance. Burning a candle is actually harder than it seems.
This is what you need to know about burning a candle correctly…
You should burn your candle for at least two to three hours in the beginning. This is to ensure that the wax melts perfectly and levels nicely. When the candle is uneven also known as ‘tunnelling’ it massively reduces the lifespan of the candle. This problem can sometimes be fixable if you let the candle burn for a while the next time. Room temperature can affect how wax looks and doesn’t deflect from the quality.
The smaller the candle the less ‘throw’ it will have in a larger room so consider your room size and if the candle will ‘fill’ that room.
Trim your wicks to 3mm every burn, this isn’t always necessary, wooden wicks are different; It's important to trim your wooden wicks before burning because when there's too much wood material between the flame and the wax, you run the risk of the candle not being able to light itself. If this happens, the candle will extinguish shortly after being lit.
You don’t need fancy tools for trimming the wick, a good pair of scissors or nail clippers will work efficiently. Here are a bunch of helpful tips for prepping your wick for a sustained burn.
- Before you trim, try quickly wiping the wooden wick down with a paper towel
- Make sure your wick is trimmed to between 1/8" - 3/16" (or 3.2mm – 4.8mm) before lighting.
- Wooden wicks have a larger surface area compared to their cotton-wicked contemporaries. We advise you to light the wick across the candle as opposed to at only one end.
- Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at one time.
- Continue to trim your wick in between burns to avoid any shooting and remove the burnt bits of wood from the top of your wick. You can easily pinch these off with your fingertips

I’m honestly so impressed with Haus of Hecate. I had ordered from another alternative perfumes brand and had been disappointed in the quality and couldn’t find a scent I liked. Then I ordered the gothic tales perfume box from here, and it did not disappoint whatsoever. It came beautifully packaged. My favourites are definitely Cathedral and Blood Moon. I’ve been layering these by applying Blood Moon first and then Cathedral, and the smell is divine. Blood Moon has a sweet, magical smell (a hint of alien perfume from another brand if you’re a fan of that). Cathedral quite literally smells like incense burning in an old church. It’s an unusual but stunning scent. My partner absolutely adores the combination of the two on me. If you’re like me and have had the same perfume for years, but are wanting a new scent that feels more ‘you’ and gives a unique, gothic smell- Haus of Hecate is the place. I’ll be ordering a large bottle of Cathedral and Blood Moon. Others in the box included Witches, which was a bit too pungent for me, but may suit others. Darkling has a slight spicy smell, but also a hint of sweet. Southern Gothic smells quite floral I think, and is nice but not for me. Soft Goth smells lovely, again slight sweet and floral smells but not too strong if you’re after more subtle smells. Couldn’t recommend more and so happy I found this brand.

So bloody happy that I found these products!! I have been looking for some alt perfumes for a long time and these DO NOT disappoint!! The box arrived swiftly and was perfectly packaged and presented. I was sent an additional sample of Midsummer which was really lovely and much appreciated. Enjoyed trying all of the scents! Witches is amazing, but Blood Moon was the one that really stood out for me, meaning I obviously had to purchase a big bottle immediately! So I ended up only liking a couple of these. I also think these are going to be layered. The lasting power is quite good but a couple ended up making me feel lightheaded. I am quite weird with perfume as it is so that’s a me problem. I really enjoyed including wearing southern gothic, owl moon, soft goth, cathedral and witches. I smelled them all and then gave them a day of wear and those were definitely my favourites. I don’t think I’ll be purchasing a full size but I am glad I tried them anyways. Maybe I’ll wear them more and change my mind. The rest will be getting passed on perfume is one of those things that you just don’t really know until you’ve tried but with that I know people who will get a better use out of it :). The owner is very lovely and really good at communicating aswell like I have had a great experience.

I was most excited to try Cathedral and it did NOT disappoint! Very heavy on smokiness and incense, if you want a touch of warmth or sweetness, I recommend spraying Blood Moon first, then Cathedral on top!
My second favourite has to be Witches, although it doesnt last on me as much as I thought 🥲 it is the exact scent Ive been looking for ages.
Midsummer and Soft Goth are tied for third place. Midsummer is exactly as you d think: flowery, summery, like a love note :) (definitely lasts on me as long as ink on paper haha). Soft goth on the other hand, has a sweet, nostalgic and most alluring scent, almost trapping you within it!
Cannot begin to describe my love for the cathedral collection! It reminds me of a warm, resinous, incense type church with a little sweetness to it too. The quality of these items are beyond my expectations and I highlyyy recommend Haus of Hecate’s products so much she is so wonderful. I even received a free sample of Blood Moon to which I purchased a full size bottle! The products and customer appreciation is otherworldly 🖤

I have SOOOOOOOO many little samples and I save all the bottles, and have so far had 4 large perfumes, bath salts and a room spray. I’ve always been very sensitive and particular with smells, and prefer woody, oakmossy and masculine undertones. My go to years ago before it was discontinued was Smugglers Soul by Lush. When that went, I was lost for a long time until I found Sunset Riot by All Saints, but this never quite hit the spot. I more recently tried Cursed which I was super excited for, but was incredibly disappointed at the price, their scents and their quality. I never bought again from there. Then I found Haus of Hecate and the rest is history…. That missing piece I had been seeking. The scents are gorgeous, the aesthetic is beyond, and each time I order I feel like a valued customer with the incredible packaging and extra samples. I just cannot fault anything about this business and will forever be a customer! I love trying the new samples and I also love mixing the scents together! Cathedral is my absolute favourite but I use it for occasions, and right now my daily scent is a mix of Summer Goth and Soft Goth.
